Protect your computer during summers! Long Live Devices...

As temperatures rise during the summer months, computers and laptops can be vulnerable to a variety of issues that can cause performance problems or even hardware damage. Here are some common issues to watch out for and how to address them. Keep them handy or share with others if you think this will help.

Overheating: High temperatures can cause computer components to overheat, which can lead to crashes, freezes, and other issues. Make sure your computer or laptop has good ventilation and airflow, and consider using a cooling pad or fan to help dissipate heat. Avoid placing your device in direct sunlight or other hot environments. Further, following factors cause overheating as well:
  • Overclocking: Overclocking is the process of increasing a computer's processing speed beyond its intended limits. While this can boost performance, it can also generate more heat and lead to overheating.
  • Failed cooling system: If a computer's cooling system, such as a fan or heat sink, fails, it won't be able to dissipate heat properly, leading to overheating.
  • High ambient temperatures: In hot environments, such as during summer months or in areas with poor air conditioning, ambient temperatures can be high enough to cause overheating issues in a computer.
  • Running resource-intensive applications: If a computer is running resource-intensive applications, such as video editing software or games, it can generate more heat and lead to overheating if the cooling system isn't adequate.
  • Malfunctioning hardware: In some cases, malfunctioning hardware such as a failing power supply, CPU or graphics card can generate excessive heat, leading to overheating.

Dust buildup: Isn't dust the TOP MOST common thing for all of us in India? :) We are a nation 'in-development'. Dust can accumulate inside your computer or laptop over time, clogging up fans and reducing airflow, which can lead to overheating. Regularly clean out dust from your device with compressed air or a soft brush.

Power surges: They occur when the electrical current flowing through the power lines experiences a sudden increase in voltage. Typical reasons include Thunderstorms, scorching summers, power outages, faulty wiring, close proximity to nearby (large) electrical appliances; Power surges can damage your computer's power supply or other hardware components. Using surge protectors is highly recommended. Surge protectors absorb and redirect excess electrical voltage away from connected devices. Also, unplugging electronic devices during lightning storms or other electrical events can also help prevent damage from power surges.

Humidity: High humidity can cause moisture to build up inside your computer or laptop, which can damage sensitive components. Keep your device in a cool, dry environment and avoid using it in humid areas like the bathroom or kitchen.

Battery life: High temperatures can shorten the lifespan of your laptop's battery. Avoid leaving your laptop in a hot car or other areas with high temperatures, and consider removing the battery if you'll be using your laptop for extended periods while plugged in. We have consolidated some of the most FAQs on laptop battery replacements here, and it surely will help you identify if your laptop needs a replacement battery. There is another one here which is a more technical guide around self-service of battery issues before you go for expert advice.
